"Again I saw that under the sun the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor favor to the man of skill; but time & chance happen to them all."

Ironically, the past was created in order to move forward, but many insist on staying there
KalabhavanNama
Kalabhavan as it got popularly known in early half of 20th century, having completed 110 years of its establishment by Millenium, entails very long history and deserve to have on record some archival kind of facts for future reference on web. This is an humble attempt - as a resident of Baroda, my ancestors came to this city then under rule of Sayajirao Gaekwar III in 1900, and I am proud resident / subject of erstwhile baroda state that was then know very well for progressive look in educational and cultural developments - to put before visitors the details as I collected and perceived.
As per the documents available it is said that conceptual birth of Kalabhavan took place at an Annual Prize distribution ceremony held in 1886 at Baroda college when T.K.Gajjar, then lecturer at Baroda Science College, spoke on need of retaining and propagating ancient Indian engineering tradition through founding of a school to disseminate the Indian engineering skill and practice. Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwar who presided the function liked the idea and in May 1890 Kalabhavan Technical Institute began functioning at then know as Senapati Bhavan [ located right opposite to Laxmi Vilas Palace Gate and now under control of Air Force] with T.K.Gajjar as first principal of the institute. Principal T.K.Gajjar left Kalabhavan institute in 1896 to assume responsibility of Professor of Chemistry in Bombay University.Though he continued to serve on panel of board of studies.

This is where erstwhile Kalabhavan Technical Institute began its activities. The impressive building of the time is located right opposite to Gate of LaxmiVilas Palace and currently occupied by Indian Air Force.

Erstwhile Kalabhavan Technical Institute [then popularly abbreviated as KTI] was headed by able principals and Prof.C.H.Vora will be remembered for very long time to come for the foundation he laid for modern Kalabhavan ,i.e., Faculty of Technology and Engineering. Prof.Chhotalal Harjivandas Vora, served for longest period of 28 years [ from 1908 to 1935], is considered to be architect who is credited for planning growth model of Kalabhavan into modern engineering college. Baroda Municipal Corporation, in memory of this contribution of prof.Vora, named, for justifiable reason, the road linking Piramitar Road and Badamdi Bag touching Tairo Gate of Faculty. Prof.Vora was well known for his reading habit and had championed titled Voracious reader among residents of Dandia Bazar. The dream of prin.Vora came true when Kalabhavan was annexed with new buiding constructed at cost of Rs.25lac to begin in 1948 Baroda Engineering College offering 3and1/2 year degree course. RajRatna Prof.Amarchand Sahagal was last principal of Kalabhavan Technical Institute and retired as Head of Electrical Engineering Department in 1954.

Gaekwad State and Aviation Industries in Baroda
Baroda state always availed service of talented ministers with vision. Learning from experience of world war II giving nice Aerodrome at Harni it also looked forward to have its own venture in aviation industry. Two German Herman Doring and Antony Rab helped to start Glider manufacturing incuding design and launched first glider on 1st June 1946 under banner of Industrial Research of Baroda State. Two of such glider were donated to Mechanical Engineering Laboratory as this Glider manufacturing facility and staff [C.G.Gupte, Krishna S. Damle,, Datar and Mehta al] were dismantled in 1950. One of these employee Mr.C.G.Gupte working in Glider manufacturing took transfer to Allahabad first and then finally shifted to New Delhi as office of aviation ministry became functional. NDelhi in Ministry and later on shited to NAL Banglore. Chandrakant G Gupte joined NAL while Krishna S. Damle associated with DRDO and contributed to India's endeavor to devellop glider section by producing ITG [ Indian Training Gliders] series. C.G.Gupte elected to take up appointment as Workshop Suptdt. at BVM engineering college in Vidyanagar and in 1973 joined as workshop suptdt in Faculty of Technology and Engineering. He retired from services in 1988 and expired in 2005.
Pictures of these gliders are shown here below with some closeup view for details.

On the basis of plans drawn by principal Chhotalal Harjivandas Vora [principal KTI 1908-1935] Kalabhavan was transformed into Baroda Engineering college offering 3-1/2year duration degree courses and found its own workshop as depicted above with overhead transmission system, typical of yester years.
This is the Dye house that earned Kalabhavan name and fame in early 1950s. Was founded in late 1890s bye Germans prof.Schumaker, and Erhart.
