Women Students & Faculty In Mechanical Engineering Department [updated on 18th August,2002] The history of women students in Mechanical Engineering Department of erstwhile Kalabhavan Technical Institute began in 1961 with induction of two students Ms. Gita Shah and Ms. Hingorani. The decade of 60s didn't see many to follow the trend except in 1965 another Ms. Bharti Jivabhai Desai enroled for degree course. The number in 1970s began improving and accelerated pace in 1980s when Mr.Chimanbhai Patel , then Chief Minister of Gujarat State, provided special 15% addition seats for girls students in engineering. Since then the average number of girls students in department are 12. Very many have pursued post graduate studies in india and overseas and are actively engaged in professional field. Few changed to field of Computer science and Business management and Cost Accounting. Some have even taken over family business to become technocrat. Many good students attracted to CAME [ a computer based curicula focusing of hardware, software and applications] elective and performed exceedingly well in studies. In fact quite a few girls participated enthusiastically to volunteer the MSU stall putup at VCCI '99 Industrial exhibition. Preeti Iyer, CAME batch of 1998, was first to participate at students paper meet 'mindbend98' at SVREC Surat and secured first prize. Harsha Tank, CAME batch of 2000, was another student participated at 'mindbend 2000' held at SVREC Surat and securing first prize. Saimali Shah,CAME batch of 1999, stood 1st in CAME elective Subject in her batch in final year. Incidentally she was also topper in CTPL subject in third year. Disha Chaudhari, CAME batch of 2001, secured first rank was awarded as many as five gold medals for her performance. Post Graduate Program & Women Students From 1968 women students began enroling for post graduate programs of department- namely M.E. in Internal Combustion Engineering and M.E. in Production Engineering. Onnathur P. Sosamma was first to enrole in 1968 in Internal Combustion Engineering followed by Ms.Jolly, currently principal of an engineering college in Madras, while Mrs.Santha Mani was first to enrole in Production Engineering in 1974. Ms.Parveen Bindra , completing her course in stipulated 18months duration as a GATE scholar, topped the M.E.[Mech.] examination held in 1993.
Women Faculty in Department Decade of 70s saw inductance of women teaching faculty in department. O.P.Sosamma was the first to join as lecturer in 1972 after completing M.E. in Internal Combustion Engineering. She resigned in 1978 to proceed to USA. In 1976 Mrs.Santha Mani joined as lecturer after completing her M.E. in Production Engineering. Mrs.Mani resigned in 1997 to migrate to USA with her family. In 1993 Parveen Bindra, graduated in Industrial Engineering 1991and PG in Production Feb.1993 where she was ranked first joined the department as Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering. She was third woman faculty to join as lecturer. She persued her post graduate study in Production engineering as GATE scholar. In fact Mrs.Parveen significantly contributed to development by bringing AICTE project worth Rs.10 lac for Vision Laboratory development and also enthusiastically participated in representiing MSU at VCCI '99. She was only faculty with MCA qualification from IGNOU where she had distinction of being selected in first batch of 30 students chosen from Gujarat. She resigned in June 1999 to take up assignement in USA. Ms.Namrata Padole, graduated in Mechanical Engineering with CAME elective 1995 and PG in Production, joined as Lecturer in 1998 leaving her first assignement with a multi-national ABBayers where she served for over 2 years. In fact first lady Mechanical engineer joining teaching with professional experience. Also she is only faculty in Mechanical capable of addressing complete spectrum of CAME elective curriculum. Charanjeet Kaur Malhi, CAME batch of 1998, did her M.E.[Production-Mfg.Tech.] Electrive and served GCET Bakrol from 2001 to 2003. She joined department as Lecturer from 27th December 2003.CNC Shaper - Guide Ms.Namrata Padole, with project partners [Peter Kain, Chirayu Joshi] and well wishers Jignesh Rupani, Ms.Bindu Pillai
